Privacy Policy for Document Reader
Effective date: September 20, 2026
App: Document Reader (Android package com.devpress.documentreader)
Developer: DevPress
Contact: qhxuan@gmail.com
The short version
- Your documents stay on your device. Document Reader has no accounts, no servers of its own, and never uploads your files, their names, or their contents.
- The app does not use analytics or crash-reporting services of its own.
- The app is supported by ads from Google AdMob. Google's ads SDK collects certain device and ad-interaction data to serve and measure ads. This is the only routine data flow to a third party, and it never includes your documents (see Advertising).
- You can remove everything the app stores from within the app or by uninstalling it.
1. Who this policy applies to
This policy describes how Document Reader ("the app", "we", "us") handles information when you use it on Android. By using the app, you agree to this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
2. Information that stays on your device
Document Reader is a local-first reader for PDF, Word (DOCX), Excel (XLSX), PowerPoint (PPTX), CSV, TXT, and EPUB files. To provide its features, the app stores the following only on your device, in its private app storage:
| What | Why | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Your Recent and Favorites lists: file name, location reference (path or URI), file size, format, and the time you last opened it | To show your recent and starred documents on the Home, Recent, and Favorites screens | Stays on the device |
| Bookmarks you create (a label and a position such as a page, slide, or row) | To return you to a place in a document | Stays on the device |
| Preferences: theme, reading theme, text size, line spacing, app language, and opt-in toggles | To remember your settings | Stays on the device |
| A temporary copy of a file you open from another app ("Open with", for example from a file manager or an email attachment) | To read the file when the source does not give the app direct access | Stays in the app's private cache; see Retention and deletion |
The app opens files you choose through Android's system file picker (Storage Access Framework) or through "Open with". It does not request broad storage permissions and does not scan your device for documents.
Document contents are processed on your device to display them, search inside them, and share them when you ask. Contents, file names, and file paths are never written to logs and never sent to us.
3. Information we do not collect
We do not collect or receive:
- your documents, their contents, names, or paths;
- your name, email address, phone number, or any account information (there is no account);
- your precise or approximate location;
- your contacts, photos, camera, or microphone data;
- usage analytics or crash reports through our own tooling.
We do not sell your personal information.
4. Advertising
The app is free and is supported by advertising provided by Google AdMob (Google LLC). Ads are shown as:
- banner ads on the Home and Favorites screens; and
- an optional rewarded video ad, which you can choose to watch to unlock the "Reading theme" feature.
When the ads SDK is active, Google may collect and process data such as your advertising ID, IP address, device and operating-system information, app version, general ad-interaction data (impressions, clicks), and diagnostic data, to deliver, measure, and secure ads and to prevent fraud. Google may use this to show personalized ads where you have allowed it. This processing is governed by Google's Privacy Policy and How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.
The ads SDK never receives your documents, file names, file paths, or extracted text. Ad placements in the app are identified only by fixed labels that do not depend on what you are reading. The app is designed so that ads never block or interrupt opening or reading a document.
Consent and control
- In regions where the law requires it (such as the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland), the app asks for your consent through Google's User Messaging Platform before requesting personalized ads. If you decline, or if consent cannot be determined, only non-personalized ads are requested.
- On Android you can reset your advertising ID or opt out of ad personalization at any time in Settings → Google → Ads (the path may vary by device).
- On Android 13 and later, the app declares the advertising-ID permission that the ads SDK uses. If you delete your advertising ID in system settings, the SDK receives a blank value.
5. Optional features that use the network
The first three items below are off by default or need your explicit action. The last one never leaves your device.
- Load images from web links (Settings, off by default). Some PowerPoint slides reference a picture by a web address instead of embedding it. If you turn this option on, the app downloads such images directly from the address written in the presentation. The server that hosts the image can see your IP address and that a request was made. When the option is off, the app shows a placeholder and makes no request.
- On-device OCR (preview, opt-in). Text recognition runs entirely on your device using Google ML Kit's on-device recognizer. Images and recognized text are not uploaded, and temporary image files created for recognition are deleted immediately afterwards.
- AI document summary. This is not available in this version of the app. If a future version adds a feature that sends document text to a provider, it will be opt-in, will state what is sent and why, and this policy will be updated before it is released.
- Local viewers. To render PowerPoint and Excel files, the app briefly runs a small server on your device's loopback address (127.0.0.1) that only the app's own viewer can reach. It does not accept connections from outside the device and does not use the internet.
Sharing a document uses Android's share sheet. What you share, and with whom, is entirely your choice and is handled by the app you pick.
6. Permissions
| Permission | Why the app declares it |
|---|---|
INTERNET |
To load ads and, only if you enable it, images linked from presentations |
ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE (added by the ads SDK) |
To let the ads SDK check whether a connection is available |
AD_ID, ACCESS_ADSERVICES_AD_ID,
ACCESS_ADSERVICES_ATTRIBUTION, ACCESS_ADSERVICES_TOPICS (added by the
ads SDK) |
To let the ads SDK read the advertising ID and use Android's ad-services features for ad delivery and measurement (see Advertising) |
WAKE_LOCK, FOREGROUND_SERVICE (added by the ads SDK) |
Used internally by the ads SDK to complete ad loading and reporting reliably |
The app does not request access to your storage, contacts, location, camera, microphone, or phone state.
7. Sharing of information
We do not sell, rent, or trade personal information. The only third-party services the app relies on are:
| Service | Purpose | Data it may receive |
|---|---|---|
| Google AdMob and Google User Messaging Platform (Google LLC) | Showing ads and collecting ad consent | Advertising ID, IP address, device/app information, ad interactions, consent choices, diagnostics (see Advertising) |
| Google ML Kit text recognition (only if you enable OCR) | On-device text recognition | Runs locally; the app does not send your images to us |
We may disclose information if required by law or to protect rights and safety, although we hold no user documents or accounts to disclose.
8. Security
The app is a reader and does not edit your original files. Office files (DOCX, XLSX, PPTX) are treated as untrusted input: the app validates file types and sizes, limits resource use when unpacking, never runs macros or embedded programs, and does not execute scripts contained in a document. The app's data is stored in Android's app-private storage, and Android backup of app data is disabled. No method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
9. Retention and deletion
- Recent, Favorites, and Bookmarks are kept until you remove them. In the app you can remove a single entry, or use Settings → Storage → Clear Recent / Clear Favorites. Clearing these lists never affects your original files.
- Temporary copies from "Open with" are kept in the app's private cache so the document can be read. You can clear them with Android Settings → Apps → Document Reader → Storage → Clear cache. Android may also remove cached files on its own when it needs space.
- Everything the app stores is deleted when you uninstall it, or when you choose Clear storage in the same Android Settings screen.
- Advertising data held by Google is retained and controlled according to Google's policies. Use your Android advertising settings (see Advertising) to control it.
We hold no server-side copy of your data, so there is nothing for us to delete on your behalf.
10. Children's privacy
Document Reader is a general-audience utility and is not directed to children under 13 (or under the applicable age of digital consent in your country, such as 16 in parts of the EU). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app, contact us and we will help address it. Ad-related data is handled by Google as described above.
11. Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR, the UK GDPR, the CCPA/CPRA, or similar laws), you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or export your personal data, to object to or restrict certain processing, to withdraw consent, and to lodge a complaint with your data-protection authority.
Because Document Reader keeps your data on your device and we do not hold any personal data about you, you exercise most of these rights directly: by using the in-app controls above, by changing your Android advertising settings, or by uninstalling the app. For data that Google processes for advertising, you can use the controls described in Advertising and Google's own privacy tools. If you have a question or request, contact us at [CONTACT EMAIL].
We do not sell personal information. Under some laws (for example the CCPA/CPRA), the advertising-ID processing by Google AdMob described above may be considered "sharing" for targeted advertising; you can limit it through the consent prompt, where shown, and your Android advertising settings.
12. International use
The app can be used worldwide. Google may process advertising data in countries other than your own, under Google's own safeguards and policies. Because we run no servers, we do not transfer your documents or personal data across borders.
13. Languages
The app is available in 28 languages. This policy is provided in English; if a translation differs from the English text, the English text prevails.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy, for example when the app gains a new feature or changes how ads work. The "Effective date" at the top shows when it last changed. Material changes will be reflected in the app's store listing or in the app before they take effect.
